You may find yourself short on hands with our 27th Jolly Club game … but luckily you have eight! Hungry harbor workers are coming by for some well-deserved lunch with only the freshest ingredients, which you have the skills to make. Can you bring a touch of luxury to this rough-and-tumble world?
In Octobuns you offer hungry guests fresh ingredients and artisanal sandwiches to fulfill their desired order. You can do this by collecting the ingredients and combining some of them to make sandwiches – but make sure you make them in the right order, or your guest won’t want it. But space in your bakery is limited, so you’ll have to jockey around for space!
The game ends as soon as someone completes 5 orders, whereby players will count who has the most points from completed orders to determine the winner.. On your turn, you can choose one of 4 actions.
The first option is to take a card from the table and add it to your bakery. If you already have an ingredient in your bakery, and you add one which could combine with it to make a sandwich, then you can stack them and add a sandwich to your bakery on top. You can also attract more guests to your bakery – by doing this, you ‘reserve’ these guests so other players can’t serve them. That way, you don’t have to worry about them being stolen away!
If you’re missing an ingredient from the market, you can also choose to trade in one of these sandwiches for any ingredient of choice from the discard pile. Keep in mind your bakery is limited to a 3×3 space, which means sometimes you’ll run out of space! In that case, you can take the fourth action to slide or remove ingredients from your bakery in order to complete orders.
If you end up with the correct ingredients in the correct order, then you can trade these in to complete an order after you’ve taken an action. You won’t only gain coins from this, but often also a bonus action which you can use later in the game. After a player completes their 5th order, the game is over and the player with the most coins wins!
Octobuns was designed by Mirthe de Clerck, her first game at Jolly Dutch. The illustrations were made by Zhenya Lyapina, who is responsible for other iconic Jolly Club games like Panda, Royale: Party at Louis’ and Tricky Badger.
